On October 3, 2024, Anthology will host its annual Fix Your Content Day contest. This is Fairfield University’s first year participating! This event is proudly sponsored by the Office of Accessibility, The Center for Academic Excellence, and Academic Computing. As part of our campus-wide commitment to inclusive education, we will be participating using Anthology® Ally capabilities. For 24 hours, we’ll be on a mission to fix as many accessibility issues in course files as we can. At the end of the day, the campus with the most files improved will be recognized and awarded a prize.

We are inviting all faculty and staff to participate. If you have content that is not used in an existing Blackboard course that you would like to improve, please email academiccomputing@fairfield.edu and we can create a Sandbox Course for you to work in. Upload your files by October 2nd at 11:59PM for your improvements to count towards our goal!

How can you help?

Begin reviewing your courses and identifying those content items with red and orange indicators. Then, on October 3, start improving as many files as possible using those indicators as a guide. Focus on images that need a description and Microsoft® Word documents to start. Aim for 100%, but improvement is what counts!

Check Your Course Accessibility Score

Check your course’s accessibility score prior to October 3rd to identify areas of concern in your course.

  1. Open your Blackboard Course

  2. Under Details and Actions, select Course Books and Tools

  3. Select Ally Course Accessibility Score

Overview

“The Overview dashboard shows the accessibility score for the course, course content grouped by content type, and a list of all issues identified in the course.”

Content

“The Content tab shows you the content with accessibility issues.”

Having trouble prioritizing? Focus on these areas:

  • Adding alt text to images directly through Anthology Ally

  • Fixing heading issues in Microsoft® Word documents (the syllabus is a great document to fix)

  • Replacing scanned PDFs by downloading an OCRed PDF from Anthology Ally’s alternative formats to boost your score

    • If the OCRed PDF is poor quality, look for an existing digital version of the file or rescan the original source
