Okta FAQ
What is Okta?
Okta is a secure login system that helps you access applications easily and safely. It allows you to:
Sign in once and access all your apps (like email, HR systems for faculty/staff, or project tools) without logging in again.
Protect your account with extra security like multi-factor authentication (MFA), which may ask for a code from your phone or app.
Staff: get access automatically to the tools you need when you join, change roles, or leave the university.
Will I need to claim my account or change my password?
All existing accounts as of September 30, 2025 will be migrated from our NetID system to Okta. Your username, password, and permissions will stay the same so you will be able to continue to access University systems with Okta as you currently do with your NetID.
How do I sign into Okta? Is it different than NetID?
You can sign into Okta with the same username and password that you used in the NetID system. The screen may look a bit different, but everything else is the same.
When will I start seeing Okta login screens?
Starting the week of September 15, 2025, we will begin rolling out Okta single sign on to university applications in groups. We will communicate via announcements in my.Fairfield and in Fairfield Today when applications will migrate, so everyone knows when to expect to see the new Okta login screen on an application.
Will I still need to use Duo MFA?
Duo will continue to be our multi-factor authentication method. The first time you login to any application that uses Okta authentication, you will need to link Duo with your Okta account. Keep reading for instructions on how to link your Duo and Okta accounts.
Linking Duo MFA
You will need to re-associate your Duo account with Okta the first time you login to an app that uses Okta authentication. Here’s how to do that:
When you login to Okta for the first time, after entering your password, you will see a prompt to Set up security methods
Click Set up next to the Duo MFA option.
You will be redirected to Duo briefly but you will not need to do anything.
When you are redirected back to Okta, click the red Continue button and you should be authenticated to the application you were trying to access.
