Although Counseling & Psychological Services strives to provide as many clinical services to undergraduate students as possible, some services are beyond the scope of our practice and specialization.  We do not provide the following services but will work with students to help them access these services elsewhere:

  • Clinical services to incoming first year students prior to matriculation, seniors who have graduated, alumnae/alumni, students studying away from Fairfield's campus (international or domestic exchange), or students who are currently on voluntary or medical leave from the university
  • Clinical services to university staff or faculty
  • Long-term counseling
  • Specialty care such as intensive outpatient services, EMDR, psychoanalysis, etc.
  • Intensive substance abuse treatment
  • Testing for learning disabilities and/or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Assessment and documentation for service or emotional support animals
  • Forensic evaluations
  • Neuropsychological evaluations or intelligence testing
  • Court ordered treatment, treatment that is the stipulation of probation, or mandated treatment
  • Evaluations for attorneys or courts related to difficulties such as alcohol infractions (e.g., driving under the influence) or other domestic matters such as parents seeking custodial authority of a student
  • Services to students who are not medically stable or require intensive medical treatment
  • Mediation for on-campus proceedings

Additionally, C&PS does not have the capacity to manage chronic conditions requiring intensive, frequent contacts. After an initial consultation, we may refer a student to more appropriate services in the community if the consultation reveals that the student's needs exceed what our model and staff expertise can accommodate.

Locating Community Providers

If you would like assistance in accessing any resources on or off campus, please contact Counseling & Psychological Services. Referral lists C&PS maintains for other providers in the area are listed below. Students may also consider browsing providers using Psychology Today to view descriptions and details about current providers listed there.

Students seeking services in the community may wish to consider whether the provider takes their insurance or what the provider's fee would be without billing insurance. Students typically can initiate finding a counselor themselves by calling the offices of a provider to inquire as to whether the provider is accepting new clients.
