Tips for Outsmarting an Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
- Use simple headers for the resume. An ATS looks for straightforward terms, such as “Experience,” “Education,” and “Additional Information.”
- The resume should be in a simple layout using basic, machine readable fonts. Do not use a template. An ATS cannot read graphics of any kind so do not use them. Often the ATS can’t even read the applicants names, so you are behind before even getting out of the starting gate.
- Use keywords and phrases that are relevant to the position, such as “health policy,” “report writing,” or “analyze.” Use the words found in the job description.
- Industry-Specific words – use words that are used in the specific industry. For instance, in public health you might use words used by professionals such as “health promotion,” “diverse populations,” and “community.”
If you are in a creative industry and want to show off your more creative side either bring the creative resume to the interview. Or, if you know it is a very small organization, they probably don't use an ATS and you are safe. Good luck!
