Credit Hour Definition
NEASC Coordinating Committee

Fairfield University is in compliance with the federal definition of a credit hour. For each credit hour, the university requires the equivalent of three hours of student academic work each week, broken down to one hour of direct faculty instruction and two hours of out-of-class academic work for approximately 15 weeks or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. Academic work includes, but is not limited to direct faculty instruction, e-learning, laboratory work, internships, practica, performance, studio work, and field work. These hours of academic engagement reflect intended learning outcomes and are verified through evidence of student achievement.
