Connecting an Amazon Echo to the 'Fairfield Guest' Network

Note: Make sure to install the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone before following the below instructions.

  1. Power on your Amazon Echo device, allowing it to boot up completely. Launch the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone.

  2. Press the setup button (button with a small dot) on your Echo device, holding it down for 10-15 seconds to put it into setup mode. You’re successfully in setup mode when you see the orange ring circling the device.

  3. In the Alexa app, you will see “Echo is ready for setup.” Press Agree and Continue. In the Searching for WiFi screen, scroll to the bottom and press “Tap to see MAC address.” Take a screenshot of the MAC address. It is a 12-character address.

  4. On your laptop navigate to the Fairfield University Non-Computing Devices portal https://devices.fairfield.edu and log in with your NetID and password.

  5. Click Add. Enter a friendly name for your device, making sure it doesn’t have any non-alphanumeric characters - for example, MyEcho - and the WLAN MAC address you took down in step #5. Click the Submit button. Your entry should look like the following format:

  1. On your Echo device, go back into setup mode by holding down the setup button again for 10-15 seconds, putting it back into setup mode.

  2. Bring up the Alexa app on your smartphone and it will detect you are in setup mode. Press Agree and Continue. In the Searching for WiFi screen, select the 'Fairfield Guest' network.

  3. Your Amazon Echo device should now be connected to the network and ready to use.
