Kaltura and Blackboard Student Features

There are different ways to use the Kaltura Tools in Blackboard to create, store, and publish video content in your Blackboard courses. Your instructors may ask you to submit video, audio, or image content as a part of an assignment, a discussion, a project, or even a test or quiz, or other projects, such as a video portfolio.


Original Course View

The majority of courses in Blackboard are using Original Course View (OCV). If you are using the Original Course View, please see the following guides.

Video Assignments in Original Course View

Begin by testing your browser for compatibility.

  1. Navigate to the assignment within Blackboard and click on the assignment link
  2. In the Assignment Submission section, click Create Submission to show the Content Editor.
  3. In the Content Editor area, click Insert Content (+) to add content.

    You may need to select the "more" icon (...) to expand the text editor and see all options.


  4. Under Additional Tools, select Kaltura Media
  5. In the pop-up window, you can either click to Embed next to an existing video, audio, or image from your previous My Media collection or click Add New to upload media or create a new recording.
    1. Record a new video:
      1. Select Express Capture
      2. If prompted, allow your browser to access your microphone and camera.
      3. Select the Start Recording button to begin. There is a 3 second count-down timer before the recording starts.
      4. When finished recording, select the Stop Recording button.
      5. You can now play back the video. If you wish to try again, choose Record Again. Otherwise, select Use This.
        Note: a copy of this recording is automatically saved in your Kaltura My Media files. You can also choose to Download a Copy if you want a local copy saved to your device.
      6. On the next screen, enter a descriptive title for your video. Then choose Save and Embed.
    2. Upload an existing video:
      1. Select Upload Media and select the file from your device's local files

        The video may take up to half an hour to process after embedding into the text editor.

  6. Once back on the Assignment Submission page, click Submit.
    submission receipt will be sent to the your email inbox.

Video Discussions in Original Course View

  1. In the Discussion Board, select the discussion forum title and Create Thread or Reply to the thread.
  2. In the Message area, click Insert Content (+) to add content.

    You may need to select the "more" icon (three dots) to expand the text editor and see all options.


  3. Under Additional Tools, select Kaltura Media
  4. In the pop-up window, you can either click to Embed next to an existing video, audio, or image from your previous My Media collection or click Add New to upload media or create a new recording.
  5. Complete your thread post and click Submit.

Ultra Course View

Fairfield University is running a small pilot of Ultra Course View (UCV). If you are using Ultra Course View, please see the following guides.

Video Assignments in Ultra Course View

  1. Navigate to the assignment within Blackboard and click on the assignment link
  2. Click into the submission text box, click Insert Content (+) to add content, then choose Content Market.
  3. In the Content Market, select Kaltura Media

  4. In the pop-up window, you can either click to Embed next to an existing video, audio, or image from your previous My Media collection or click Add New to upload media or create a new recording.
  5. Once back on the Assignment Submission page, click Submit.
    submission receipt will be sent to the your email inbox.

Video Discussions in Ultra Course View

  1. In the Discussion Board, select the discussion forum title and Create Thread or Reply to the thread.
  2. Click into the submission text box, click Insert Content (+) to add content, then choose Content Market.

  3. In the Content Market, select Kaltura Media

  4. In the pop-up window, you can either click to Embed next to an existing video, audio, or image from your previous My Media collection or click Add New to upload media or create a new recording using Express Capture.
  5. Once back on the Assignment Submission page, click Submit.
