Flip (formerly Flipgrid)

Flip is a free teaching and learning tool.

Logging In

  1. Navigate to https://flip.com/groups/13995918/topics
  2. Choose Educator Login
  3. On the next screen, choose Microsoft Login and enter your Fairfield University email
  4. Log in with your NetID when prompted (make sure you remove the @fairfield.edu from the Username box)

Flipgrid allows you to create Discussion Topics on their own, as well as to organize your Topics under Groups. We recommend that faculty always create a Group for each separate class being taught, then place the Topics used in that course under that Group.

Create a Group

  1. Choose Create Group.
  2. Enter a name for your Group (e.g., EDTC 4301 Fall 2020).
  3. For the Add Students option, check Student Email.
  4. Click the Next button.
  5. A box will appear titled Add your students. The email domain @fairfield.edu will already be listed on this screen, but you MUST type in @student.fairfield.edu after that press Return/Enter, otherwise your students will not be able to log on to your Flipgrid Group. Once you see both email domain names listed in blue, you can click the Next button.
  6. Your Group is now created, and you’re ready to add a Topic where your students can post their videos.

Create a Topic

  1. From the list of Groups that you’ve created, click on the Group Name where you want to Topic to reside.
  2. Click the Add a Topic button on the right-hand side of the screen
  3. Add a Title and a Prompt to your topic.
  4. Set a maximum recording time for how long the student videos can be.
  5. Optional:
    1. Moderation. New videos will be hidden from students until you activate them. Previously submitted videos will remain active.
    2. Focus. Add an icon, an image, etc., to represent the Topic.
    3. Choose More Options to...
      1. Add Topic Attachments (links or documents that are relevant to the topic)
      2. Topic Status. If you are preparing topics in advance you may want to leave the topic as hidden for now. You can also set a date range for the topic availability.
      3. Feedback. Add basic feedback or create a rubric for the Topic

Sharing Your Flipgrid

There are two different ways to share your Flipgrid with your students: Provide them with a Join Code to a specific Topic or to an entire Group of Topics; or Embed a specific Flipgrid Topic on a Blackboard page.

Providing your students with a Join Code is the simplest way for them to engage with your Flipgrid, especially because they will likely want to record their videos on their phones via the Flipgrid mobile app. You can either share a Join Code associated with a specific Topic, or share the Join Code associated with an entire Group (class), which will allow students to contribute to all the Topics in that Group without you having to share individual Join Codes.

To find the Join Code for a Group...

  1. Simply log on to Flipgrid and view your complete list of Groups. Click the Share button associated with the Group you want your students to contribute to:
  2. A box will appear with the Join Code for that Group. Simply click the Copy button to copy the code; you can then paste it into Blackboard or an email message to distribute to your students.

NOTE: Copying and distributing this Group Join Code to your students will allow them to see and engage with all the Topics you place in that Group, including those that you add in the future.

To find the Join Code for a Topic...

  1. Log on to Flipgrid and view your complete list of Groups. Click the Group name that contains your Topic.
  2. On the Group page, click the Share button to the right of the Topic for which you want the Join Code.
  3. A box will appear with the Join Code for that Group. Simply click the Copy button to copy the code; you can then paste it into Blackboard or an email message to distribute to your students.

Embedding a Flipgrid topic into Blackboard

  1. Go to the listing of your Topics and click on the Share button for the topic you’d like to embed
  2. Click on the blue button with the </> symbol. This will copy the Embed code to your clipboard.

Now that you have the code copied, you can go into Blackboard and paste it into your course. See Building Content in Blackboard Original Course View for more information on embedding in Original courses. Ultra Course View documentation coming soon.
